Hello & welcome to Sappho, a cool hang-out whose ambience affords a certain unique chill-out factor hard to find elswhere in Taipei - the live music program provides a platform for artists to further their musical inclinations, without having to “sell-out” to, say, a philistine materialist proprietor out to make a fast buck. But then again, you will not be subjected to 9000 decibels of in-your-face-death-metal or random noise generators, no matter how alternative, because at the end of the day, Sappho must take a stand & create its own sense of “cool” - leaving you to judge for yourselves - in fact our original aim was to make this space completely non-commercial, and register the club as a charity - but guess what - you can’t sell alcohol under the auspices of a charity - so until the laws change here, we’ll have to stick with the existing set-up.
Sappho started off as the name might suggest (i.e. associations with the Greek poet) leaning towards a female clientele; enter A-liang (of A-liang & Friends fame) who gradually ushered-in her music/arts friends to the club, and accordingly the gender mix soon went both ways, leaving only the bar tenders as the original Sappho-ettes (Mini, Xiao Yu & Bambi). Nowadays Sappho is frequented by a interesting mix of musicians, artists, creative types - often local Taiwanese, but also with a diverse international crowd. The sort of thing you’d never expect to find in Hong Kong, with its expat cultural apartheid scene, know wot i mean john. The pride of our bar is the cocktails & wines, but we also stock some Euro-beers. Tasty bar snacks too - there will be a link to our food reviews later.".
